Gemology – Sodalite (Na₈Al₆Si₆O₂₄ Cl₂) is named for its large sodium content. It most commonly occurs in massive opaque stones, however, can rarely be found as transparent crystals. Originally found by Europeans in 1811, it was not considered an ornamental stone until 1889 when massive deposits were discovered in Canada. It has a cubic crystal structure and is a 5.5-6 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
